Southland District Health Board
Modern medicine, practised in the most personalised way possible.
Southland District Health Board has superb opportunities for health professionals seeking clinical variety, quality teaching and a family focused, outdoors lifestyle. We provide hospital and health services to the Southland/Wakatipu region of 108,000 people, and employ a wide range of medical, nursing, midwifery, allied health and mental health professionals at Southland Hospital – the base hospital, located in Invercargill City.
The unique thing about Southland Hospital is that it is big and modern enough to have an impressive range of services and diagnostics for a secondary level hospital, yet it is small and intimate enough for staff to get to know each other and their patients too. This is modern medicine, practised in the most personalised way possible. Indeed, it’s not unheard of to have patients bring you crayfish or oysters to show their appreciation!
Southland Hospital is a near new, 181-bed, secondary level teaching facility situated in Invercargill City. Our 1400 friendly staff enjoy a broad range of cases which provide good opportunities for those starting off in their careers to gain a wide experience and exposure to clinical cases, whilst also ensuring generalists and experienced staff enjoy a varied and interesting workload.
Acute medical and surgical services, an Intensive Care Unit, outpatients, 24 hour emergency department, paediatrics, maternity, rehabilitation and therapy services and inpatient and community mental health services are provided from Southland Hospital, which is well equipped for its size and features digital radiology technology with MRI and CT capability as well as electronic patient management system.
Affiliated to the University of Otago and the Dunedin School or Medicine, we are a teaching hospital and an accredited provider of training programmes with respective medical colleges and societies, as well as the Southern Institute of Technology’s School of Nursing.
